Preserving 60 Years of Fire Brigade History Through Photograph and Slide Digitisation
Founded in Manchester in 1963, The Fire Brigade Society began by supporting young people with an interest in the fire and rescue service. With the enthusiastic backing of Chief Officers across the UK, the Society quickly grew into a respected international organisation, with members spanning Europe, the USA, and Australia.
Over the decades, the Society has published more than 200 issues of its flagship magazine, Fire Cover, alongside numerous specialist publications. Its members have visited fire and rescue services, manufacturers, and operational sites worldwide, documenting appliances, equipment, incidents, and events for future generations.
As a result, the Society built an extensive archive of historical photographs and 35mm slides spanning more than 60 years. To preserve this valuable collection and make it more accessible, a digitisation partner was required.
Document Options was selected to deliver the project.Using a combination of specialist equipment, including Kodak photo scanners for standard prints, a Contex flatbed scanner for delicate or oversized items, and dedicated Epson 35mm slide scanners, each image was carefully digitised, cropped, and quality-checked to ensure accurate reproduction.
The project was completed within the required timeframe, delivering a high-quality digital archive ready for preservation and sharing.
Colin Carter, Society Secretary, commented:“The service provided by the company has been first class and they have completed the scanning in a very short space of time. We would have no hesitation in recommending the company.”If you have photograph or slide collections that require digitisation, please contact us to discuss how we can help preserve your archive.
